Training PR!!

Well, in my circle of running friends, this is not a big deal but I have to brag on myself. Yesterday afternoon I ran 13 miles in 2hrs 9 seconds and broke my personal best of 10 miles. The weather was absolutely perfect with it being about 60 degrees and windy. I rant the yellow trail at Shelby farms (there and back) and then ran around the Ag center for about 20 minutes to finish. I can honestly say that I felt very strong the majority of the time except that last 15 minutes and at that point my hips started getting tight. I now feel comfortable that I will finish strong at the Gtown half marathon. Hello Ultra, I see you in my future.
Any suggestion on how I should start training to get ready for an ultra in 2 months?

I don't know dude, for me it would not have given me enough time to get ready for 26.2 or more when I was where you are in you running right now.I have complete confidence in your ability to run that distance, and you actually probably could by Nashville, however you have to realize that your going to be more prone to injury if you try to cram training in for a race that long. If I were you I would just concentrate on the half for right now and continue working on building your base for the next few months. Nobody just wakes up one day and starts running ultras, it takes time to get there. Like I said, I know you can eventually do it with ease, you just don't want to jump the gun and get hurt. Keep in mind, the rule of thumb is this, you want to increase your long run by no more than a mile or 1.5 every other week. This should give you a better idea at what kind of time your looking at. Holla yo!!!!

Thats what I was afraid you might say. I would definitely rather not being injured. I guess I can just see how I'm doing around that time and make a last minute decision. I think you can sign up the day of the race. At worst I can drink beer and watch my boys cross the finish line in style. Actually that doesn't sound bad at all now that I think about it. Ha - later

Great job!!

I did my first ultra (40 miles) after running the streets for just two months. Of course, I was on the elliptical for a year and had run alot in the military (long time ago).

You can do it...the key is upping your mileage without killing yourself (very tricky). You may run a slow ultra, but you can finish if your body is strong and your will to keep moving is stronger. Which ultra are you aiming for?

Mike,
I was actually first thinking about running in the Nashville Marathon and then look into which ultra would be best suited for me. I'm sure it would be a 30 miler. Which one do you suggest for a start?

Well...if you want to stay on the blacktop, then there's Strollin' Jim 40 miler on May 3rd. On May 31st, there's the Catsmacker 22 miler (on the Ouachita trail). On August 2nd, the Bartlett Park Ultra will have a 50k, 40m, & 50m.

See how you do in the marathon and then decide from there. There is no hurry...just stay healthy and you will get there!
